Last week, the Wisconsin Court of Appeals affirmed a decision in favor of a student journalist at University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh who sought records about a business professor subject to prior employment investigations. The University agreed to release the records but the professor sued to block release. Pines Bach LLP attorneys Christa Westerberg and represented the journalist at the request of the Student Press Law Center.
This week’s opinion affirms the importance of access to information about public universities, which is of particular importance to student journalists who monitor these institutions. It also affirmed the practice of giving a requester’s attorney an opportunity to see records on an attorneys-eyes-only basis for purposes of briefing and litigation.
The decision, available here, is recommended for publication.
